What Is the TEF Canada Exam?

The Test d'évaluation de français (TEF) Canada is a French-language proficiency test recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It measures how well you understand and use French in everyday, academic, and professional situations — making it a key requirement for many Canadian immigration and citizenship pathways.

This guide covers:

  • TEF Canada test versions
  • Test format and sections
  • NCLC scoring
  • How to prepare effectively

TEF Canada Versions

1. TEF Canada (four skills)

  • Tests all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
  • Who should take it? Most economic immigration programs (Express Entry, PNPs, and many professional pathways)
  • Completed in one sitting at an accredited test centre

2. TEF Canada — oral skills only

  • Tests Listening and Speaking only
  • Who should take it? Some citizenship and specific program requirements

TEF Canada Sections

Compréhension orale (Listening)

  • Multiple-choice questions based on audio recordings
  • Assesses understanding of spoken French in real-life contexts

Compréhension écrite (Reading)

  • Multiple-choice questions based on written texts
  • Assesses reading comprehension and inference

Expression écrite (Writing)

  • Two written tasks in French
  • Assesses clarity, organization, and range of vocabulary and grammar

Expression orale (Speaking)

  • Recorded spoken tasks with an examiner
  • Assesses fluency, pronunciation, and ability to express ideas in French

TEF Scoring and NCLC

Each TEF Canada section is scored on a scale up to 699 points. Results are reported as NCLC levels (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens), which IRCC uses for immigration eligibility.

Higher NCLC levels generally unlock more immigration options. Check the latest IRCC language requirements for your specific program.
